WBCS, Inc. was founded in 1998 as an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Its mission is to support early-stage breast cancer and prostate cancer research at The Medical College of Wisconsin.

Since its founding, WBCS has donated over $4.75 million to MCW for promising research and to endow the recently established WBCS Professor of Breast Cancer Research. Promising breast cancer and prostate cancer research by past WBCS grant recipients has led to over $12 million in additional competitive extramural research grants to MCW by the National Institutes of Health and other foundations.

This year is the 16th Anniversary for the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse!

Paddlefest is Southeastern Wisconsin’s premier on-water test paddling event. Our Milwaukee store, located in the heart of Downtown plays host to this annual event on the Milwaukee River. We combine our rental and demo fleets of canoes and kayaks with those of our manufacturers’ sales representatives’ to provide you with the widest selection of boats to look at, sit in and test paddle.

Paddlefest is a great opportunity to test paddle boats before you actually purchase your boat. While we would love to provide free paddles all weekend, Paddlefest is truly about trying out different kinds of boats and making an educated decision with your purchase. If you would like to paddle just to be out on the water, we encourage you to stay tuned to our blog for paddle demo’s we may host throughout summer.

In addition to a number of seminars that will help you find the right gear and teach you how best to use it, we are offering a series of Paddler Mini-Clinics. These mini-clinics are intended for brand new paddlers who are looking to get started and would like some personalized help before they get out on the water. This year, we will be offering Guided River Cruises. Please stay tuned for details.

What to Wear:

Paddling is, of course, a water sport so there is a high probability you will get a little wet. We’re not suggesting that you’re at all likely to end up in the water. Is it a possibility? Yes. Even the most stable boats will flip if you try hard enough, but our expert staff will make sure you’re paddling boats that will make you comfortable and confident. What is far more likely is that you may brush up against a wet boat or get dripped on a bit by your paddle. Of course, there’s always friends and family to factor in. You never know when they might “accidentally” splash you. While we can’t vouch for everyone in your party, we can assure you that our employees and safety boaters are not likely to start any splash wars (which is not to say they wouldn’t defend themselves if one broke out).

The best clothing for paddling is typically quick-drying synthetics. These items dry quickly and keep you warm even when wet. In addition, the synthetic fibers tend not to absorb water and become heavy the way natural fibers like cotton would. Anyone who has ever had a pair of jeans they were wearing get wet knows how miserably long it can take for them to dry out. Below are two lists, one of recommended clothing and gear, the other of things to avoid wearing.

Please note that we do not provide spray skirts during the test paddle but you are welcome to bring your own.

Sign Up Now for a Guided River Cruise During Paddlefest!

Guided Paddles | Saturday afternoon & Sunday morning – you pick!

This year we will be hosting two seperate guided paddles during Paddlefest weekend. On Saturday, as the demo closes down, and Sunday, before the demo, you will have the opportunity to join us for a casual paddle down the Milwaukee River. For these trips, you have the option of taking out any of the demo boats available at Paddlefest. It is a great opportunity to take a longer cruise in a boat you may be considering for purchase or to just see Milwaukee from a new perspective.

Saturday afternoon paddle: At 4:00pm, participants are welcome to either bring their gear down to our dock or, select a boat from either our fleet or our manufacturers’ fleets to take out on the cruise. Boat choice is on a first come first serve basis and there will be no reserving of boats prior to 4:00pm on May 19th.

This is a round-trip paddle which means we’ll be leaving from and returning to the Laacke & Joys dock.  The cruise will leave a little after 4:00pm and return around 5:30pm.

Cost of the trip is $10 per person.

Sunday morning paddle: We will be heading out before the doors officially open on Sunday, May 19th. This cruise will leave from our dock at 10:30am and return around 12:00pm. Participants are welcome to arrive starting at 9:30am.

This year, we will again be opening up our demo fleet for you to pick your boat from if you so choose. At 9:30, participants are welcome to either bring their gear down to our dock or, select a boat from either our fleet or our manufacturers’ fleets to take out on the cruise. Boat choice is on a first come first serve basis and there will be no reserving of boats.

This is a round-trip paddle which means we’ll be leaving from and returning to the Laacke & Joys dock. Participants can expect to be back at the store around 12:00pm or so.

Whether it’s securing a boat for transportation on your car, repairing your rudder or using a rope to tow another kayaker, there are lots of useful knots that paddlers should know. We’ll provide the ropes and instruction for you to learn how to tie some of the most important ones. Snacks and beverages provided.
